1 Corinthians 13:12 tells us:
“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”
We are living in a time where people are busy — not with purpose, but with motion.
Busy with survival.
Busy with distraction.
Busy with self.
So busy that:
- We have no time for others
- No time for reflection
- No time to seek answers
Life feels like it is spinning out of control.
And deep inside many hearts lives a quiet, haunting suspicion:
“Something isn’t right… I might be running the wrong race.”
THE AGE OF DISTORTED MIRRORS
We live in the age of the Digital Revolution.
We have:
- 24-hour connectivity
- 24-hour entertainment
- 24-hour anxiety
- 24-hour comparison
Yet, despite all this connection, people feel:
Disconnected from purpose
Disconnected from truth
Disconnected from God
We see ourselves constantly — selfies, profiles, curated identities.
But what we see is not truth.
It is reflection.
And reflections can lie.
THE MELTING OF FOUNDATIONS
The values that once shaped moral conscience — humility, sacrifice, repentance, reverence — have slowly melted away.
Not through persecution.
But through replacement.
A new worldview has taken root:
Secular worldview says:
- You are your desires
- Truth is personal
- Success is material
- Identity is self-created
Christian worldview says:
- You are created
- Truth is revealed
- Life has eternal purpose
- Identity is received from God
Yet today many believers live in tension:
Christian in confession
Secular in practice
A generation of cultural Christians has emerged.
They attend church…
But the world shapes their thinking.
They speak faith…
But live by appetite.
They follow Christ…
But pursue possessions.
PLAYING CHURCH
Church has become something we play rather than something we become.
We sing the songs
We hear the sermons
We nod at the truth
But transformation is absent.
James warns us:
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and… immediately forgets what he looks like.
The tragedy today is not ignorance.
It is forgetfulness.
We look into the mirror of God’s Word…
Then walk away unchanged.
THE CAPTIVITY OF THE MODERN MIND
Paul gives a serious warning:
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy… rather than on Christ. (Colossians 2:8)
Notice the word:
Captive
Bondage today does not always look like chains.
Sometimes it looks like:
- Career obsession
- Material hunger
- Social approval
- Ideological trends
- Digital validation
We are not persecuted out of faith.
We are distracted out of it.
VISIBLE YOU vs REAL YOU
There are now two versions of every person:
The Visible You
- The curated identity
- The public persona
- The social self
The Real You
- The anxious soul
- The questioning heart
- The restless conscience
The Visible You runs the race.
The Real You wonders:
“Why am I still empty?”
Because possessions cannot satisfy spiritual hunger.
Because success cannot heal existential confusion.
Because identity without God becomes performance.
THE CALL TO RETURN
Into this confusion comes a simple but powerful command:
“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.” (Lamentations 3:40)
This is not a call to activity.
It is a call to examination.
Not:
Do more.
But:
Look deeper.
Ask:
- Who am I becoming?
- What is shaping me?
- What am I chasing?
- Whose approval defines me?
Are we running toward Christ…
Or just running?
FROM REFLECTION TO FACE-TO-FACE
Right now, Paul says:
We see dimly.
We live partially.
We understand incompletely.
But a day is coming…
When the reflection ends.
And reality begins.
When:
Faith becomes sight
Performance becomes truth
Masks fall away
And we stand face to face with the One who already knows us fully.
The question is:
Will that moment be recognition…
Or regret?
THE WAY FORWARD
The solution is not:
More noise
More speed
More religion
It is:
Honest self-examination
Repentance
Return
To move from:
Playing church → Living faith
Cultural Christianity → Convicted discipleship
Visible identity → Real transformation
FINAL CALL
This generation is not lost because it lacks knowledge.
It is lost because it avoids reflection.
But God still invites:
Examine
Test
Return
Step away from hollow philosophies.
Step away from the captivity of culture.
Step away from the mirror of illusion.
And walk toward the day…
When you will no longer see a reflection —
But stand face to face with Truth Himself.
Amen.
