US President Joe Biden is eager to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the next few weeks, according to top White House aide Jake Sullivan. Sullivan, the first American national security adviser to visit China since 2016, met with Xi after three days of talks in Beijing.
Sullivan visited Beijing at a time when China’s security disputes with US allies Japan and the Philippines increased. In a meeting with Xi on Thursday at Beijing’s ornate ‘Great Hall of the People’, he said, ‘President Biden looks forward to communicating with you again in the coming weeks.’
He further said, ‘President Biden is committed to managing the problem in the South China Sea region responsibly and not to cause competition or conflict due to this. President Biden is determined to work together wherever his interests meet.’
According to the Chinese government media, Chinese President Xi told Sullivan in the meeting that although there are ideological differences between China and the US, China is confident that it can be resolved through dialogue and discussion.
“There has been no change in China’s commitment to the goal of stable, healthy and sustainable development of China-US relations,” Xi said at the meeting. “We believe that the US and China will move forward together.”
