North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un wants Donald Trump to become the US president. Ri Il Kyu, a former North Korean diplomat in Cuba, told the BBC about this. Ri Il said that North Korea still believes that it will be easier to reach an agreement with the US on its nuclear weapon program during Trump’s tenure.
In fact, at the Republican Party convention last month, former US President Donald Trump said, “I think Kim Jong must be missing me. He also wants me to become president.” According to former North Korean diplomat Ri Il, Kim Jong will try to reach a compromise with the US by using this warmth with Trump.
‘America is a deceitful country, never keeps its promises’
On Trump’s statement, North Korea’s state news agency KCNA wrote that America is a deceitful country that never keeps its promises. After this, North Korea also gave an official response to Trump’s statement.
Pyongyang had said that the victory of any party does not have any effect on the policies of America. Therefore, it does not matter to North Korea who becomes the President of America.
‘North Korea will make false promises to America to get sanctions lifted’
Talking to BBC, Ri Il said, “North Korea will never destroy its nuclear weapons. It can make a deal to shut down its nuclear weapon program in exchange for the removal of sanctions from America. But this deal will be a fraud. North Korea will make this promise to America only to get the sanctions lifted.”
After an agreement with the US, North Korea suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2012. In return, the US promised to supply food to North Korea. However, shortly after this, North Korea displayed rocket launchers and intercontinental ballistic missiles in a military parade. After this, the agreement between the two countries was cancelled.
Trump used to call Kim Jong as Little Rocket Man.
During his first term as President, Trump named Kim Jong as ‘Little Rocket Man’. In 2018, when the then US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited North Korea, Trump sent a CD of British singer Elton John’s song ‘Rocket Man’ as a gift to Kim. The purpose of this visit of Pompeo was to stop North Korea from making nuclear weapons.
This year, Kim Jong destroyed his nuclear test flight. Many foreign journalists were also called to see this. During a summit in Singapore in 2018, a new agreement was reached between the US and North Korea. Under this, an agreement was reached to improve the relations between the two countries and to make the Korean Peninsula free from nuclear weapons.
Despite the agreement, the nuclear deal could not be reached.
In 2019, there was a dispute between the two countries once again regarding the terms of the agreement. After this, Kim Jong wrote a letter to Trump and invited him to visit North Korea. On 30 June 2019, Trump became the first US President to visit North Korea. However, a nuclear agreement could not be reached between the two countries.
On 6 October 2019, Kim Jong ended all discussions with the US on nuclear weapons. North Korea’s Foreign Ministry had said that there would be no talks between the two countries until the US lifts the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.
