Every 11 minutes, someone in the US is killed by a gun
America is the ‘dream country’ for most Nepalis. Whether it is for study, employment or tourism, there are many Nepalese who want to go to America once in their life. However, recently news of Nepali people suddenly losing their lives in shootings and killings in America has started to emerge.
In the first week of August, news was published that Nepali nurse Mamta Kafle was murdered in Virginia, USA. Less than a week after that, another Nepali girl was killed in the city of Houston, Texas. 21-year-old Muna Pandey from Bhojpur, who had come to America for studies, was shot dead in Houston.
Muna was found dead in her apartment seven days ago. Muna, who went to America for graduation in 2021, was studying nursing at Houston Community College. Houston police arrested 51-year-old Babisingh Shah on charges of murder and prosecuted him for murder. The police are preparing to present Shah in court on September 3 on the charge of murder and on September 5 on the charge of possession of illegal weapons.
Earlier, Mamta Kafle, a 28-year-old Nepali nurse who went missing from Manassas Park in the state of Virginia, was also killed. During the investigation, it was revealed that Mamta was killed by her husband Naresh Bhatt and the body was hidden after the murder. According to the police, Bhatt killed Mamta at home. Manassas police arrested Naresh last Thursday on the charge of hiding the dead body. The hearing about the incident is ongoing.
These kinds of news that have been published frequently in the recent past have made the Nepali people who are preparing to go to the US to study, work or do business or are preparing to go. Along with that, the comment that ‘America is not safe’ has also been created for the general public.
According to the latest statistics, one person dies every 11 minutes due to a gun in America. At least 55 percent of them are suicide cases. Similarly, various statistics show that 40 percent of incidents are related to murder and violent crime. Other incidents are unintentional and related to actions of police officers.
Various studies have shown that the risk of suicide increases when there is easy access to weapons. Access to firearms in the home more than triples the likelihood of suicide. Any suicidal person who has access to a gun has a 95% higher chance of dying.
Ninety-nine percent of people who survive a suicide attempt once do not attempt it again. But if a gun is used for suicide, the chances of getting a second chance are very low.
Similarly, firearms are used in 40 percent of murders and violent crimes. Research has shown that easy access to guns increases the risk of homicide. US states with higher percentages of people who own guns have higher gun homicide rates. Likewise, a woman is five times more likely to be killed if the assailant has a gun. According to statistics, there are incidents of domestic, community and mass shootings due to guns.
Every year, 1,000 people are killed in gun-related incidents by the actions of police officers. According to a Johns Hopkins University study, unarmed black men are three times more likely to be shot and killed by police than white men.
Similarly, it seems that robbery, robbery, vehicle theft or other crimes related to property are more common in America than violent crimes. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there are an average of 1,954 such crimes per 100,000 people in the United States. Violent crime is 380 per 100,000, according to the FBI.

According to a report by the BBC’s Science Focus, St. Louis is the most dangerous city in the state of Missouri in terms of violent crimes such as gun-related murders, assaults and robberies. In St. Louis, there are 282 violent crimes for every 100,000 people.

Likewise, Stockton in California is eighth with 1414 cases, Albuquerque in New Mexico is ninth with 1369 cases, and Indianapolis in Indiana is in tenth place with 1333 cases.

From the point of view of safety, Naperville in the state of Illinois is in the first place. In this city, 834 crimes per 1 lakh have been recorded. Which is an average of 67 percent less than the average crime rate across the country. Similarly, Florida’s Port St. Lucie is in second place with 919 crimes. North Carolina State Cary is in third place with 1,035 incidents.
Frisco, Texas is fourth with 1,59 cases and Thousand Oaks, California is fifth with 1,172 cases. Similarly, McKinney in Texas, Gilbert in Arizona and Santa Clarita in California are ranked sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. California’s Sunnyvale and New York’s Yonkers are ninth and tenth.
