Iran’s President Masoud Pezhekian said on Tuesday that Hezbollah cannot stand alone against Israel’s attacks.
“Hezbollah cannot stand alone against a country that is receiving protection and support from Western countries, European countries and the United States of America,” Pezheskian said in an interview with CNN .
He called on the international community to “not allow Lebanon to become another Gaza”. About 500 people, including 35 children, were killed in the Israeli attack on Lebanon on Monday, according to the country’s health ministry.
Israel has said that a ‘large number’ of Hezbollah fighters were killed when it attacked around 1,600 locations in south-eastern Lebanon . This included a ‘targeted attack’ in Beirut. The Israeli army called it ‘Operation Northern Arrow’ .
Iran has called on the UN Security Council to take “immediate action” against Israel.
“Iran will not remain indifferent,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on social network X. “We stand with the people of Lebanon and Palestine.”
The Israeli attacks started in less than a week, when 39 people were killed and nearly 3,000 were injured in an attack targeting Hizbullah’s communications equipment.
Pezheskian, who is visiting New York for the annual General Assembly of the United Nations, has accused Israel of warmongering .
“We all know very well that if there is a major war in the Middle East, it will not benefit anyone globally,” Pezheskian told the media at the round table conference. “Israel is trying to create a situation of massive conflict.”
He said that Iran has never started a war in the last 100 years. But he stressed that no one is allowed to threaten Iranian security and regional integrity.
