‘Compelling Debate’ at the UN General Assembly demanding an end to Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories

United Nations member states will hold a pressing debate on Tuesday demanding a formal end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

The General Assembly said that Israel will be forced to end its illegal presence in the Palestinian territories as soon as possible.

Arab countries organized a special session of the Assembly a few days before dozens of heads of state and government arrived at the United Nations headquarters to address the opening session of the General Assembly.

The Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour accepted the draft resolution of the General Assembly and said that the pressure of the international community and the ICJ decision would force Israel to change its behavior.

The draft resolution calls for an end to the illegal presence in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel.

In the proposal, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Palestinian territory and the return of the occupied land and property and the return of the displaced Palestinians are also demanded.

Mansour emphasized the sympathy and unity of the Palestinians and mentioned that they are hoping for a positive outcome.

The Security Council has been largely lenient on the Gaza issue, while the US has repeatedly condemned Israeli attacks. In the midst of the war, the General Assembly made several efforts in support of the Palestinian people.

Last May, the Assembly voted in favor of the symbolic proposal for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations, with 143 votes in favor, nine against and 25 abstentions.

As pressure on this issue, Washington had used veto in the Security Council earlier.

Although General Assembly resolutions are not binding, Israel has already condemned the new resolution as ‘insulting’.
