Bangladesh: Expectations ‘heavy’ on interim government

After the collapse of the government in Bangladesh, an interim government has been formed under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus. In addition to this, the vacuum seen in the state power in the last few days has come to an end. After Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and left the country, there was a political vacuum in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is facing many challenges right from the beginning of the new government. Yunus has taken the leadership of the government when the law and order in the country is in shambles. Bangladesh is still in turmoil. The economy of the country is going through stress. In addition, there is a need for extensive reforms in many other areas. Various discussions have started regarding the challenges facing the new government in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s new interim government has distributed various ministries and departments within 16 hours of being sworn in. The Cabinet issued a notification on Friday. According to this, Yunus, the chief advisor to the government, will be in charge of a total of 27 ministries, including defense, education, food, and land. Along with him, 13 other advisers have shared the responsibilities of 13 ministries. Mohammad Tauhid Hussain has been given the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Retired military officer M. Sakhawat Hussain will head the Ministry of Home Affairs. Ex-Governor of Bangladesh Bank Saleh Uddin Ahmed has been given the charge of Finance Ministry. Nahid Islam, a student of Dhaka University who is active in the student movement, will take charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Youth and Sports.

Law and order

Since the fall of the Hasina-led government, almost all the police have been absent from Bangladesh. Several police stations have been attacked. Locals are accused of shooting, arresting and torturing law and security agencies.

The locals have protested against them and expressed their anger. Recently, it has been reported that a policeman was killed in an attack on a police station by an angry mob. There is a big gap of trust between the law enforcement agencies and the common people.

A series of robberies, robberies and vandalism

Political analysts in Bangladesh say that the biggest challenge for the newly formed government is to strengthen the legal system as well as maintain peace and order. Law enforcement agencies and citizens have lost trust in each other. Both are feeling insecure themselves.

Need for improvement

Citizens of Bangladesh are feeling the need for reform in many areas including corruption and abuse of power. Even before the formation of the political government, there has been a demand for reform. Ahsan H. Mansoor, executive director of the Policy Research Institute, says Bangladesh’s polity needs reform in all agencies.

Political analyst Zubaida Nasreen insists that all constitutional institutions should be reformed and made to work independently.

Due to the economic crisis in Bangladesh recently, dissatisfaction in public life started to manifest. This was the main reason behind the participation of people from all walks of life in the student movement. The economic situation of Bangladesh is gradually deteriorating. Prices of goods are rising, inflation is heading towards unbearable levels.

Economists say that in order to gain the trust of the people, the new government should focus on reducing inflation and the prices of daily consumables.

How long is the tenure of the new government?

The reforms demanded by students and civil society in Bangladesh need enough time. Political parties are demanding early elections. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party held a rally in Dhaka on Wednesday and demanded that elections be held within three months. According to analysts, three months is not enough time for the interim government to solve the current challenges. – In collaboration with the BBC
